Albrecht Dürer

Born: 1471, Germany, Nuremberg   Died: 1528, Nuremberg

Renaissance graphic artist and painter. Son of a goldsmith. Served an apprenticeship to his father before training under the Nuremberg artist Michael Wolgemut (1434-1519). He then briefly worked as a book illustrator in Basle and Strasbourg before establishing his own workshop in Nuremberg in 1494. He visited Venice in 1495 and again between 1505 and 1507, and the Netherlands in 1520-21. He was a life-long friend of the humanist scholar Willibald Pirckheimer (1470-1530). He is best known for his detailed engravings and woodcuts of religious subjects but also produced altarpieces and even designed a triumphal arch for the Emperor Maximilian. His brother Hans Dürer became a court painter in Poland
