Mildred Eldridge

Born: 1909, UK, England, London, Wimbledon   Died: 1991

Painter and illustrator. Also known as Mildred 'Elsi' Eldridge. Daughter of a London jeweller and wife of the Welsh minister and poet R.S. Thomas (1913-2000). Studied at the Royal College of Art, 1930-33, before winning a Prix de Rome scholarship in 1934 enabling her to travel in Italy for a number of years. She then taught at a school in Chirk, Denbighshire, where she met and married Thomas, the local curate, in 1940. She designed cards for the Medici Society and illustrated a number of books published by Faber and Faber including Henry Williamson's 1948 edition of 'Star-born', J.R. Monsell's 1946 edition of 'The Three Royal Monkeys' and botanical illustrations for C .F. Leyel's 'Elixirs of Life', 1946. She exhibited through the Royal Watercolour Society. From about 1970 she suffered from a long-term illness which eventually led to blindness
