Maurius Alexander Jacques Bauer

Born: 1867, Netherlands, The Hague   Died: 1932, Amsterdam

Painter, printmaker and illustrator. Studied at The Academy in Hague, 1879-84. Won the Grand Prix for Etching (shared with Whistler and Zorn) at the World Exhibition at Paris in 1900. From 1888 onwards he travelled extensively visiting Turkey, Egypt, Palestine, Morocco, Spain and India. He produced numerous etchings of places and figures, particularly Oriental subjects, in a free, sketchy line. His book illustrations include lithographs for Flaubert's 'La légende de St Julien l’Hospitalier', 1891
