Émile Bernard

Born: 1868, France, Lille   Died: 1941, Paris

Painter and art critic. Son of a cloth merchant. Studied at the Atelier Cormon in Paris, 1884-86. He worked in Pont Aven, Brittany, with Gauguin, 1888-91, before travelling to the Near East and Egypt, 1893-1904. He helped curate the first retrospective of Van Gogh and established the art journal 'La Rénovation Esthétique'. He painted portraits and nudes in a variety of styles
