John Sell Cotman

Born: 1782, UK, England, Norwich   Died: 1842, London

Painter and etcher. Son of a silk-mercer. He moved to London in 1798 where he was first employed colouring aquatints for Rudolph Ackermann (1764-1834) and then, in 1799, by the painter and patron Dr Thomas Monro (1759-1833). He was influenced by the watercolourists Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) and J.M.W. Turner. He made annual sketching tours to Wales, 1800-02, Yorkshire, 1803-05, and, later, three trips to Normandy. He returned to Norwich in 1806 where he became a leading member of the 'Norwich School' and enjoyed the patronage of Dawson Turner (1775-1858). In 1834 he was appointed Professor of Drawing at King's College, London. He painted watercolours of landscapes and architecture, often using flat washes
