James Watson

Born: c.1740, Ireland, Dublin   Died: 1790, UK, England, London

Engraver. Father of Caroline Watson (1760/1-1814) who was appointed engraver to Queen Caroline in 1785. Received early training at the Dublin Society and, after moving to London, probably with mezzotint engraver James Macardell (1727/8-1765). Watson, who was a fellow and director in 1770, exhibited with the Society of Artists between 1762-75. He became a well-known mezzotint engraver and succeeded Macardell as main engraver to Joshua Reynolds after 1765. He also created mezzotints from images by e.g. Gainsborough, Van Dyck and Rubens. His works were published by print sellers such as Ryland and Bryer, Bowles, Sawyer, Parker and Bakewell; however, from ca. 1762 onwards he began publishing his works himself.
