George Morland

Born: 1763, UK, England, London   Died: 1804, London

Painter. Son of the painter and picture restorer Henry Morland (1716-1797) and brother-in-law of the engraver William Ward (1766-1826). Studied briefly at the Royal Academy Schools before undertaking an apprenticeship under his father, 1777-84. In 1785 he travelled to France visiting Calais and St Omer. Back in London he had success as a painter of animals and genre scenes but led an exuberant life running quickly into debt. The demands of creditors caused him to move several times including spells in Leicestershire and the Isle of Wight. He eventually succombed to alcoholism and served a prison sentence for his debts. His scenes of village life, taverns and stables - which frequently reflect the contemporary class tensions of rural society - became popular through published engravings. He generally declined commissions including one for the Prince of Wales
