1871 Watercolour on paper, mounted on a wooden stretcher: gilded wood frame
360 x 265 mm. Bequest: George Powell 1882
This work was commissioned by George Powell. An undated letter from Solomon to Powell consults the patron about the composition; ''would you like the ruined temple background to your ''Love'' or the sea + sky that we spoke of elsewhere - will you kindly let me have a line as it is being begun''
A naked angel dreaming / contemplating. A young, naked male angel, viewed in profile, sits cross-legged with his right hand supporting his chin and his left arm by his side. The angel has a halo, red wings, auburn hair and closed eyes. A flowing / wind-blown blue drape surrounds him and partly crosses his lap. On the left are three seashells on a beach. In the background is a calm sea with flat horizon. Painted in light washes with gold ink highlights. Painting is cracked, in rectangular shape, one inch in from all margins
