Sculpture / S31 Thomas Edward Ellis1903 Plaster, painted mm. T. E. Ellis (1859-1899) was a student at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, from 1875 to 1879. From there he graduated to Oxford, and in 1886 became the Liberal MP for Merioneth. In 1894 he was appointed chief Liberal whip under W. E. Gladstone and spent much of the remainder of his career on education in Wales. He was a major supporter of the movement for a National Library in Wales, and was the founder and first president of the Old Students' Association of the University College of Wales. He died in Cannes, France in April 1899, and was buried at Cefnddwysarn. |
