Part of a set of 12 lithographs, representing the months of the year, combining contemporary work by Luigi G. Mattei (b.1945) with seventeenth century engravings by Guiseppe Maria Mitelli (1634-1718). Developed from an idea by Giancarlo Roversi. From an edition of 299 sets. The prints are contained in a portfolio with an introduction, descriptive notes and a short biography of Guiseppe Maria Mitelli, all in Italian
Grotesque figure; Mattei & Mitelli, January. A male figure split in two halfs, the right side by Mitelli and the left side by Mattei. Mitelli's figure stands astride the body of a pig?, has a grotesque face, sausages wrapped around his waist, a knife and a pail of liquid pours from his left shoulder. A small figure, representing Aquarius, is enclosed in a circle in the upper right corner. Mattei's figure is nude with an alien-like head and holds an axe in his right hand. In the upper right corner is the same alien-like head viewed face-on. Drawn with cross hatching. Text on image, 'GENNARO.'
