Prints / PR298 Death of the Virgin
1518-1520 Woodcut in black on cream laid paper, mounted on cream laid paper with a thin border of gilt metal strip 134 x 94 mm. George Powell or John Williams?? Springinklee was a pupil of Albrecht Dürer [1471-1528] and himself a gifted draughtsman. Here he sympathetically illustrates the death of the Virgin Mary, a subject not written about in detail in the Bible. Left therefore to his own imagination, Springinklee's print shows the influence of his teacher's close attention to detail on a small scale design show object description |
