This biblical story is told in John Chapter 18, verses 13-14. It illustrates the betrayal of Jesus Christ that resulted in his trial and eventual crucifixion. A clue to the scene lies in the cockerel in the left background, which alludes to the disciple Peter's denial and repentance; the cockerel has subsequently become known as a symbol of penitence
