The scroll is inscribed with the following: 'Ingenuus, Liber, Pictor Succensor, et Aequus, Spretor Opum, Mortisque. hic meus est Genius. Salvator Rosa' [translation; sincere, free, fiery painter and equable, despiser of wealth and death, this is my genius, Salvator Rosa.
Five figures idolise a semi-nude young man (Salvator Rosa?): a woman kneels with a painting, palette and brushes, a satyr holds a piece of paper, a robed man holds a book and some scales?, a young woman handles a pigeon and a standing woman presents a staff and a hat.
