The Duke of York was the leader of the Yorkists during the Wars of the Roses and hoped to become King himself. He was, however, killed by the Lancastrians. In this scene, he is told by his enemies that his son Edmund has been killed in battle. He appears after the battle, still in armour, wearing a mock crown that Margaret puts on his head.
