From a series of twelve Shakespeare characters produced by Mortimer in the 1770's.'York' appears in Shakespeare's 'King Henry VI' Part III. The Duke of York was the leader of the Yorkists during the Wars of the Roses and hoped to become King himself. He was, however, killed by the Lancastrians. In this scene, he is told by his enemies that his son Edmund has been killed in battle. He appears after the battle, still in armour, wearing a mock crown that Margaret puts on his head. York has been teased by Queen Margaret for wanting to be King. He cries onto the cloth that had been used to wipe up Edmund's blood
