George Powell or John Williams From a series of twelve Shakespearean characters produced by Mortimer in the 1770s. Ophelia is the leading female character in Shakespeare's play, 'Hamlet', and in love with the hero. When her father is killed and their love seems doomed, she becomes mad and takes her own life. The artist depicts Ophelia's great distress. Here she is shown wearing a white dress and with flowers and herbs in her hair. She carries a basket of herbs that she has picked to distribute. At this point in the play, Ophelia's father has died and she is broken-hearted. show object description |
