Second (final) state. The original drawing (1916) was published in 'Hampstead: Being Eight Sketches in Pencil with some Letterpress', published in an edition of 10,000 in 1916. Richards was commissioned for this booklet / sketchbook by Frank Pick, Head of the Design Department at London Transport, so as to advertise the Underground. The proceeds of the sales were donated in aid of wounded soldiers in Hampstead. The etching was probably made from the drawing a year later. 'Whitestone Pond, Hampstead Heath', presumably the same print, was exhibited at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers in 1917
