Presentation Plate for the Print Collectors' Club, 1925. The sitter is Effie Pearce, sister of Edward Pearce, late Lord Pearce, the barrister who was responsible for the 'Pearce Commission' for Ian Smith's proposals for Rhodesia. Raymond Ray-Jones married Effie Pearce in Brighton in 1926. Effie trained as a doctor at St Mary's Hospital, one of the first women to do so, then she qualified as a physiotherapist at Middlesex Hospital
Portrait of Effie Pearce. She is seated, has short dark hair and dark eyes and wears a broad rimmed hat, a blouse, a skirt and a coat with a large button and fur cuffs and collar. Her right hand is rested on her right knee. The subject is lit by a low level light from a lamp which casts her shadow onto the wall behind her. She occupies the right hand side of the plate. Etched in very fine detail with hatching and cross hatching and some stipple for the face. Upper left background left unworked. Paper has the watermarks 'Made' and 'F.J. Head & Co.'
