Publisher/Manufacturer: Chenil Gallery, Kings Road, Chelsea 1902 Etching in black on cream laid O.W.P.& A.C.L. paper
126 x 100 mm. Loan: Gregynog, Davies sisters 1989
Proof (or possibly number 1 of an edition of 25?). First state. Six proofs have been recorded of the first state before the medallion was added. The edition of 25 was published, in the second (final) state, by the Chenil Gallery for John's one-man exhibition there in 1906. The title was derived from a painting by Raphael. Etched in Liverpool
Female nude; portrait of a seated pregnant woman. She sits in a slightly slumped position with her head turned to her right. Her hair is short, centre parted and curly. She wears a choker style necklace around her neck and a bangle on her right wrist. Her hands hold a pelt which is laid over her lap. The background is plain with hatching and crosshatching in the lower half. Etched in fine detail with some stipple for the face and hair. Wiping used to create a slight even surface tone. Paper has the watermarks 'O.W.P.' and 'A.C.L.'
