Publisher/Manufacturer: Chenil Gallery, Kings Road, Chelsea 1902 Etching with drypoint in black on cream laid O.W.P. & A.C.L. paper
127 x 101 mm. Loan: Gregynog, Davies sisters 1989
Number 1 of an edition of 25. The edition of 25 was published by the Chenil Gallery for John's one-man exhibition there in 1906. However, Campbell Dodgson suggests that only 15 impressions of this plate were taken. One of twelve etched self portraits in costume in the manner of Rembrandt
Self portrait. The artist is dressed in 'gypsy' style clothing including a scruffy jacket and a wide-brimmed hat. The artist is bearded and holds an etching needle, above a plate, in his right hand. He leans his forearms on a desk. Background is plain with hatching only behind the artist's arms. Etched in a sketchy line with additional drypoint. Fine detail for the face with some stipple. Wiping used for tonal contrast. Paper has the watermark '[O.] W.P. & A.C.L.'
