The original fresco, painted between 1502 and 1508, is in the Piccolomini Library, Siena Cathedral. This section of the fresco is also engraved (see PR246) and can be seen on the end wall in PR1446
Fresco depicting Aeneas Silvius appointed Cardinal by Callistus III; foreground, a Pope, wearing a mitre, seated upon a throne ordains a kneeling Aeneas Silvius with a Cardinal hat, figures in Renaissance costume watch the ceremony, in the centre is an ornate altar-piece with a painting of a Madonna and child with two Saints; middleground, a large crowd wearing various hats some with feather plumes; background, the interior walls of a church featuring two arch windows and a coffered ceiling with a suspended ornate canopy. Surrounding trompe-l'oeil effect of an arch. Text on image 'TEROS OF EVTERMIHI'
