Doyle's 'Bird's-Eye Views of Society'- series consists of sixteen images which were published in Cornhill Magazine between April 1861 and October 1862. Doyle wrote humorous articles to accompany each image.
A ballroom filled with standing people dressed in suits and ball gowns. Elderly ladies and 'wall flowers' are seated on the right-hand side. Flags are suspended from the walls which are decorated with full-length paintings of dignitaries. The orchestra is crammed into a balcony at the back of the room. A sign attached to the balcony reads 'Quadrille'. The Dalziel signature is in the lower right-hand corner. The paper is yellowed with age and has some folds.
