Victorian Periodical Wood Engravings / PL3282

Framley Parsonage

Artist: Millais, John Everett [1829-1896]

Publication Title: Cornhill Vol.2
1860 (year of production)
Wood engraving mounted on grey card

175 x 120 mm.
Purchase: Puttick and Simpson Auctioneers, Leicester Square, London 1924

Serial originally published in the Cornhill Magazine, Jan. 1860-April 1861. Illustration depicts Lady Lufton and the Duke of Omnia as in Chapter XXIX: "Lady Lufton, as she retreated back on to Dr. Easyman, curtseyed low; she curtseyed low and slowly, and with a haughty arrangement of her drapery that was all her own; but the curtsey, though it was eloquent, did not say half so much,--did not reprobate the habitual iniquities of the duke with a voice nearly as potent as that which was expressed in the gradual fall of her eye and the gradual pressure of her lips. When she commenced her curtsey she was looking full in her foe's face. By the time that she had completed it her eyes were turned upon the ground, but there was an ineffable amount of scorn expressed in the lines of her mouth."
