Illustration for ‘The Lame and the Lazy; or What I Learned from a Cripple’ by a ‘city man’, a drunk man, seated, side on, on a chair, leans forward onto a table with his right hand fisted, broken pipe in left hand, orders his wife / woman to bring him another ‘pot’ of beer, scared children hiding around their mother. The room and table are in disrepair, bits of broken pipe laid across the table, and an empty bowl and walking stick are placed on the tabletop by the woman, and an empty pot / jug has rolled onto the floor by the man’s feet. The woman, stood side on, holds a baby to her breast whilst a girl stands behind her tugging at her skirt and a boy, seen from behind, crawls up to her from under the table. Background; turned over stool, fireplace and sheet? Hanging on the wall. Detailed wood engraving with cross hatching and thin black border. Artist signature in the bottom right corner. (p.97).
