Philip II, Duke of Orleans (1674-1723) studied natural sciences before directing military campaigns in Spain and Italy from 1705 to 1708. The will of King Louis XIV appointed him regent over the minor King Louis XV. Philip II referred it to Parlement and had the will annulled giving him absolute power which he exercised until Louis XV took his majority in 1723. He became first minister to Louis XV shortly before his death
