Dr. Gareth Owen was Principal of University of Wales, Aberystwyth from 1979 to 1989. He studied Zoology and lectured at the University of Glasgow, 1950-64 and Queen's University of Belfast, 1964-79. His research interests included electron microscopy, and the morphology of mollusca and brachiopoda. On arriving at Aberystwyth he learnt Welsh and was appointed an Honorary Member of the Gorsedd in 1983
