Stanley William Hayter

Born: 1901, UK, England, London   Died: 1988, Paris

Printmaker, painter and writer. Studied chemistry and geology at King's College, London, 1917-21. Worked in the oil industry in the Persian Gulf during the early 1920s. Settled in Paris in 1926 where in the following year he established 'Atelier 17', a print workshop used by many surrealists including Yves Tanguy (1900-1955) and André Masson (1896-1987). On the outbreak of war in France he took 'Atelier 17' to New York where he remained until 1950. He developed colour viscosity printing, which allowed multiple oil-based colours to be printed in the same pass of the press. He wrote 'New Ways of Gravure', 1949, and 'About Prints', 1962. He worked in a variety of print media creating surreal abstracts
