One of the earliest endeavours to bring the best of Welsh art into the public arena was that of the Contemporary Art Society for Wales. It continues to play an important role increasing public awareness of Welsh art and in helping young Welsh artists. A purchaser is elected annually and subsequently, about every four years or so, the Society stages exhibitions of recent purchases inviting institutions to submit a list in order of preference with the expectation of receiving two or three works. Through the works it has received, that include oils by Cedric Morris, Kyffin Williams, Thomas Rathmell, Wil Roberts and Terry Setch, the University's holdings of art in post-war Wales has been greatly enriched by donations from CASW.
