Elvet Lewis and the Catherine Lewis TrustAt a time of severe cut backs in British universities, and when sources for funds for the collections had all but dried up, the Elvet Lewis Bequest brought a long-awaited reversal of fortunes. In 1981 Lewis died leaving to the University his estate in memory of his wife 'for the purchasing for the College works of art'. The Catherine Lewis Trust Fund has provided purpose-built galleries to house the collections and has since funded an active programme of acquisitions to build upon the existing collections of graphic art and studio ceramics. With proper facilities for storage and display, in secure and environmentally controlled conditions, the University has been eligible for public funding both for collection management and the purchase of work of art. The Council for Museums in Wales, the Museum and Galleries Commission / Victoria & Albert Museum Purchase Fund and the National Art Collections Fund have generously supported projects. When a change in government policy in the early 1990s made museum funding more selective the structure was already in place to allow for the smooth transition to professional status as a Registered Museum. |
