Provenance

Cecil Y Lang was an acclaimed scholar of Victorian non-fiction and Professor of English at the University of Virginia, USA 1965–1991. He earned his PhD at Harvard University and went on to become “probably the most distinguished editor of Victorian non-fiction materials in the world”. His books include The Pre-Raphaelites and their Circle (University of Chicago 1968), The Letters of Matthew Arnold (6 volumes, University of Virginia 1996), The Swinburne Letters (2 volumes, Yale 1959) and The Letters of Alfred Lord Tennyson (2 volumes, Harvard University 1981 & 1987).

Throughout his career he made numerous research trips to London. In 1959, Lang began putting together his now almost-compete collection of James McBey etchings. Lang died on 15 February 2004, aged 82, and his Estate subsequently approached Garton & Co., UK print dealers and publishers, to sell the Collection on behalf of the family. UW Aberystwyth was the first UK museum to view and select from the Collection.
